The brief:

Culture Chelmsford is an independent charity dedicated to developing and promoting culture across Chelmsford and its surrounding areas.  

Its mission is to connect and intensify the voices of local creative communities, from grassroots artists to large organisations, ensuring everyone has a role in shaping cultural life. This is a stepping-stone not only to amplifying local people’s voices, but helping them to influence Chelmsford’s future by shaping the conversation.

We worked with the charity to produce a simple, one-page narrative which they could use in two ways:

  • to communicate the charity’s work to the outside world

  • and to give its champions an easy way to explain their support to others

What we delivered:

The charity’s work is complex, but this document needed to be simple. It was not only an internal branding piece, but also a tool to create ripples within the community, enabling supporters to garner further support.

It was particularly key to show the real-world results of its work. To some, art and culture can seem remote from day-to-day life - but this is a charity whose work has real impact in the community.

Through a series of mini-discussion workshops with key staff, we produced three drafts, listening to feedback and distilling the essence of the charity’s story into a clear, inspiring narrative that captured:

  • the charity’s mission, origins and strategy

  • what it means to be a cultural champion

  • how together, the charity and its champions are shaping civic life, empowering young people, attracting visitors and investment, and bringing culture to people’s doorsteps.

I love the work of distilling complexity into something that packs emotional punch, so this was a fantastic project for me to work on. Culture Chelmsford are doing really interesting things.
